Black Bench

July 23, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

We can’t even begin to tell you how thrilled we were when we lucked out and came across this solid oak bench. We nabbed it up right away. Benches are really hard to find these days. We are always on the lookout for them. So this find really made our day.

We chose to paint this one in our favorite combo, Miss Mustard Seed’s Typewriter Black Milk Paint and hemp oil. Milk paint and hemp oil are like peanut butter and jelly, they just go together. We like to apply the hemp oil with a chip brush and then wet sand it with a fine grit sandpaper. The result is the smoothest finish ever.

We didn’t get any chippy paint this time. You just never know what you are going to get with milk paint. It’s so unpredictable. We could have used some sort of resist and forced some chipping but we like the element of surprise. It’s half the fun of milk paint!

We did sand the edges and give the bench a light distress. We love the way the black looks with the natural wood.

Measures 48″L x 36″H x 17″D

Sold!

Available for local purchase only at Brothers Antiques North (Medina, Ohio and surrounding area.)

Kids’ Table and Chairs

December 3, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We’ve been wanting to do a little table and chair set for awhile now. So we were pretty excited when we found this little set.

Child size table and chairs

It was solid wood and had loads of potential.

We started by giving the table and chairs a good cleaning and thorough sanding. We decided to give the set a “Farmhouse” look.

The chairs and table legs are painted with our favorite white chalk paint.

Sanded smooth and lightly distressed to help camouflage any distressing that might be done by the little ones.

Being as this set is for children we chose to use milk paint to stain the top because it contains no additives or distillates that can harm you or the environment. We finished the entire piece by sealing it with all natural, food safe hemp oil.

The table measures 22”H x 27”W

The chairs measure 27”H (chair backs). The seat measures 13”H x 14”W

Vintage Cane Seat Chair

October 31, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We are a sucker for a great vintage chair. Even more so when they are solid and sturdy.

We painted this one with a 50/50 blend of Snow White & Oyster White by the Old-Fashioned Milk Paint Co. We knew we wanted an authentic chippy look for this chair.

We were so excited to find the cane seat still intact. Yay!!!

After sanding smooth we sealed the chair with hemp seed oil from Miss Mustard Seed. Hemp oil is our favorite finish for milk paint.

Salvaged Wood Box in Typewriter Black

August 7, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We upcycled this wood box from a piece of turn of the century salvaged house trim. We love to be able to take something old and discarded and make it into a beautiful decor piece. We painted this one with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Typewriter. We then gave it a light distressing and sealed it with hemp oil.

Barn Bench

July 24, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We found this bench while out on one of our Saturday morning excursions. It was one of those mornings when we almost didn’t go out, we just weren’t “feeling it.” Boy, are we glad we went. It turned out to be a great haul, which included this wood bench. The bench is solid! The hubby always likes it when we find a piece that does not have to involve him. He’s our fixer-upper guy and we sure do abuse appreciate him.

We are calling it the Barn Bench since we found it at a barn sale.

After cleaning and sanding, we chose to paint it with a 50/50 mix of Snow White and Oyster White milk paint by The Old-fashioned Milk Paint Co.

We started by painting the spindles and legs first. Might as well get the hard part over first! We got the exact amount of chippiness we were hoping for. We then added extra-bond to the remaining milk paint. This helps the paint adhere better and you get less chipping. We decided we didn’t want too much chipping on the rest of the bench, mainly the seat area. We then gave the entire bench a good sanding for a super smooth finish.

We lightly distressed the edges to compliment the chippy milk paint, adding to the time-worn finish. We then sealed the bench with hemp oil by Miss Mustard Seed. It is quickly becoming one of our favorite finishes for milk paint.

This bench measures 63″ long, easily sitting 3- 4 people comfortably.

White Wall Shelf

July 23, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We found this wood shelf on one of our trips to Tennessee. It had a not so very good paint job in a not so flattering color.

We usually shy away from previously painted pieces but this one had such beautiful detail we just couldn’t pass it up.

With lots of prep work and sanding, we were able to get a nice smooth surface for our new paint. We painted the shelf in our signature white chalk paint using Behr Swiss Coffee.

We then sanded the entire piece for a smooth finish and gave the edges a light distress. We like the way the subtle distressing makes the details pop.

We then finished the piece by sealing it with hemp oil by Miss Mustard Seed.

This shelf is solid wood and measures 30″W x 26″H x 7″D
9″ between the top & middle shelf
10″ between the bottom & middle shelf

Vintage Sewing Table

June 25, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We upcycled this darling little wood table by painting it with milk paint. We used a 50/50 blend of Oyster White & Snow White by The Old-Fashioned Milk Paint Co. We didn’t get too much chipping on this one. You just never know what you’re going to get when working with milk paint. Kind of makes it exciting! We finished the piece by sealing it with hemp oil.

If you are looking for a unique, one of a kind piece this might just be it!

We painted the inside of the drawers with General Finishes Lamp Black. We didn’t want chippy paint inside the drawers and thought it would add a nice contrast.

The drawers just hang from these rails.

This is a stable little table measuring 23”W x 14”D x 27”H

Rustic Solid Oak Bench

May 8, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

When we first saw this bench, we knew we had to use milk paint on this one.

We love the chippy authentic aged finish you get with milk paint. We used a custom mix of Oyster White and Snow White by The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co. We then distressed the entire piece with our orbital sander and sealed it with hemp oil.

We’ve only used true milk paint a couple of times and we are always amazed at how smooth the finish is.

Vintage Imperial Table

April 9, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We can’t tell you how nervous this one made us! This was our first time using true milk paint. We’ve wanted to try it for awhile but the uncontrollable chipping made us hesitant. We love a chippy look but with true milk paint, you just never know what you are going to get. So when we found this table we decided to bite the dust and give milk paint a try! We used Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Oyster White. Once the paint had dried, we sanded off all of the loose paint and sealed it with hemp oil.

We were really surprised by the lovely, smooth finish the milk paint gave us. Love that!

It was kind of fun (and scary) to watch all of the loose paint chip off.

We just never knew where the paint was going to chip off…or how much.

All in all, we are quite pleased with the finish we were able to achieve with milk paint. We can’t wait to use it again, maybe try some layering!

Rustic Shabby Chic Table

April 1, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

We love a rustic shabby chic look as much as the next guy! When we spied this one in a thrift store we knew we had to have it. It was quite worn and in need of a new top. We knew a little white paint and distressing would make all that detail just pop. We thought about adding an upholstered top and making it a small bench but we weren’t sure if it could handle the weight. It was solid for a table, but a bench? We opted to keep it a table and add a rustic planked top.

We started by cleaning and lightly sanding the piece. We painted the table base with our favorite go-to DIY chalk paint using Behr Swiss Coffee. We then gave the table a moderate distress with sandpaper and sealed the paint with hemp oil. For the plank top, we cut cedar planks down to size, sanded well and stained with Weathered Oak by Minwax. We secured the top with wood glue and a brad nailer.

Rustic Shabby Chic Table

rustic shabby chic

We went over the table with a white glaze to get in all the nooks and crannies. We finished it by sealing with a dark glaze.

We love how the rustic top balances out all of the feminine detail. We hope you like this as much as we do.
